Who we are
EH Smith is an independent, family-owned builders merchant that has been trading for over 100 years. Based predominantly in The Midlands but with a strong presence in London and the Home Counties, we have a positive reputation for delivering excellent service to projects as wide ranging as Battersea Power Station and Brindley Place, to residential extensions and home renovations. We pride ourselves on the product knowledge of our staff and the range of materials we hold in stock, particularly in the brick, timber and civils categories.
Our expertise in brick in particular was what lead Wienerberger, the largest manufacturer of clay products in the world, to approach us in 2008 to introduce into the UK construction market the biggest selling product from their global portfolio; Porotherm clay blocks.

What is Porotherm?
Porotherm is a multi-cellular clay block walling system that is a direct replacement for concrete blocks and is categorised as a Modern Method of Construction . This innovative system seamlessly combines the time-honoured qualities of clay with cutting-edge engineering techniques. With its multi-cellular design, Porotherm offers exceptional thermal performance, superior soundproofing, and robust structural integrity. These high-performance clay blocks empower construction professionals to create buildings that not only boast striking aesthetics but also excel in energy efficiency, strength and durability.
Sustainability is at the heart of what makes Porotherm an ideal solution for many construction projects. It has the lowest level of embodied carbon of any masonry construction type and is recyclable at the end of its life. As it is made from a natural material it is fully breathable which enables it to help manage moisture vapour in buildings. In addition to all of this, Porotherm uses 95% less water in the build process versus using cementitious blocks with sand and cement mortar.
What we do
As we have been developing the UK Porotherm range along with Wienerberger for several years, we are well placed to offer support that goes beyond simply delivering materials to site. We have Demonstration Centres in Solihull and Hemel Hempstead for anyone to come to in order to see how the Porotherm system works practically.
EH Smith has a RIBA certified CPD on multi-cellular clay block walling systems that can be delivered in customers' offices, online, in our Demonstration Centres or at our London office.
